Liverpool made it two out of two in the Premier League as they overcame Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, adding to their 4-0 demolition of West Ham United on the opening day.
It wasn’t the free-flowing attacking performance that we are used to seeing from Jurgen Klopp’s side, but it was a hard-fought, well-earned win – one that may prove important when it comes toward the end of this season.
If Liverpool are to properly challenge for a first league title win in almost three decades, then it is wins like this that tend to make the difference between success and failure.
So the victory was a good one, but how did the players perform individually on a warm summer evening in South London? We have all the ratings below…
Alisson 7.5/10 – Another solid performance from the Brazilian ‘keeper. He dealt with everything perfectly and made some fine saves as he got two clean sheets in two games. Inspires confidence with everything he does.
Trent 6/10 – Not a shocking game from Trent, but not one of his easiest nights, his end product and ability to deal with Zaha seemed to prove difficult for him, but he managed it in the end.
van Dijk 7.5/10 – Typical ‘Rolls Royce’ performance, mixed in with a little bit of monster truck. Dealt with everything and looked composed as always. One of, if not, THE best centre back in the league.
Gomez 9/10 – Pace, composure, timing and leadership. Gomez showed all these traits tonight and it looks like finally we’ve found our long-term partner for van Dijk, so watch out Dejan Lovren. Man of the Match at Selhurst Park.
Robertson 6.5/10 – Didn’t struggle but didn’t produce anything special either. One of his more average performances.
Wijnaldum 4.5/10 – Lazy, lacklustre and looked lost throughout the game. At fault for not closing Townsend down and left so much open space in his areas. Poor from Gini tonight, and an opportunity missed to further cement his place in a competitive midfield.
Milner 7/10 – Poor first-half but massively improved in the second, looked dominant and eager to win the ball back. Scored the opener with a well-taken penalty, and never looks like he will miss when he stands over the ball from 12 yards. Also, loved it when he decked Zaha, that was fun to watch.
Keita 7/10 – Looked unbelievable at times but also led a few easy passes astray, I am sure he will continue to improve and become one of the best in the world. Not to mention he should have scored also (but let’s not mention that). Earns an extra point for THAT turn and long pass into Salah alone.
Salah 6.5/10 – Didn’t pay particularly well and still managed two assists! Instrumental in getting Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent off (who was having an excellent game). Not the best night from Mo but still a good performance.
Firmino 5/10 – Just struggled to get involved really, not much else to say. One of his worst games in a red shirt, but it didn’t affect the result, so no biggie. Still, could face competition from Daniel Sturridge for his place.
Mané 6.5/10 – Mané was poor in the game, but had to up his rating because he scored the goal to seal the game. Needs to improve his all-round ninety minute performances in the future. Still, three goals after two games is an excellent start for the Senegalese.
Jordan Henderson (on 66′) 6.5/10 – Helped to sure-up midfield after replacing Milner. Could start instead of Wijnaldum next time out.
Adam Lallana (on 87′) N/A – Not enough time on the pitch to earn a rating.
Daniel Sturridge (on 90+3′) N/A – Not enough time on the pitch to earn a rating.
