Sean Dyche’s Burnley made life uncomfortable for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at lunchtime on Sunday, but ultimately the Reds found enough to secure a vital three points.
The away side controversially took an early lead direct from a corner, before Liverpool began to dominate the tie, and should have been out of sight when an injury time goal from Johann Berg Gudmundsson set up a nervy final few minutes.
Still, braces from Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino stood out, as Liverpool kept within touching distance of league leaders Manchester City.
And here are your ratings…
Alisson 6.5 – Was definitely fouled for Burnley’s opener, so there can be no real blame attributed to the Brazilian there. Lived life on the edge – at times – when playing out from the back.
Trent 5.5 – His touch seemed to have deserted him for large periods of the contest, but a sumptuous late cross should have been turned in by Sadio Mané.
Matip 5.5 – Arguably the Cameroonian’s worst performance this season. Never looked at ease, making some poor decisions. Gave away the cheap corner kick that led to the Clarets’ opener.
Virgil 7.5 – Hardly broke into a sweat. Won’t be happy with two goals conceded at home, not that they were in any way his fault.
Robertson 7 – Not his most complete display in an attacking sense but crucially prevented some potential Burnley counter-attacks from sparking into life.
Gini 6.5 – Strong argument that Gini should be given a rest next week at Fulham. Tidy as ever today, but the Dutchman did seem to lack his usual energy.
Fabinho 7.5 – On current form, the former Monaco man is easily Liverpool’s best central midfielder. A calm presence in the middle of the park.
Lallana 7 – Many – myself included – were pleasantly surprised by Adam Lallana’s performance this afternoon. A tireless display and he felt less lightweight. Still lacked an end product, though.
Salah 6.5 – Might be missing his shooting boots at the moment, but the Egyptian played a key role in both of Firmino’s goals. It’ll come, Mo.
Firmino 8 – Best player on the pitch in the first half. Alert to net the early equaliser, followed by a clinical finish when he bagged his second.
Mané 8.5 MOTM – Just two goals off Sergio Aguero’s return of eighteen, Liverpool’s Senegalese is suddenly in the frame for the Premier League golden boot. Mané was a constant livewire on the Liverpool left, and when playing like he was today, is impossible to defend against. Superb.
Henderson 6.5 (Wijnaldum) – admirably filled in at right back when it became required.
Keita 6.5 (Lallana) – came on and involved himself very quickly. It will come for Naby Keita.
Sturridge 7 (Alexander-Arnold) – provided an assist during his five minute cameo.
