RATINGS: Bayern Munich 1-3 Liverpool – Players do their jobs to ensure Champions League progress

Well that was f***ing fantastic.

What promised to be a tough night at the Allianz Arena turned, in the end, into a relative walk in the park for Liverpool as they strolled into the last eight of the Champions League.

Sadio Mané – as has been the case on a number of occasions since the turn of the year – was the difference for the Reds with two great goals, while the imperious Virgil van Dijk got forward to notch as well, heading home from a corner.

A defensive lapse allowed the hosts to get one for themselves when Bayern forced Joel Matip to score in his own net, but generally Liverpool were mature and tidy, producing exactly what was required of them.

Here’s how the players got on…

Starting XI

Alisson 7.5 – A very reassuring presence throughout. Could do nothing for the goal.

Trent 7 – Decent performance on a big night. Kept Ribéry quiet, but Coman gave him more trouble.

Matip 6.5 – Unlucky with the own goal although he had looked shaky at times. Did make some important challenges in the second half though.

Virgil 8 – Does he have the best header of the ball in the world? His most important goal as a Liverpool player.

Robbo 7 – Very disappointing late yellow to keep him out of the quarter final first leg. Poor for the Bayern goal but otherwise an impressive performance from the Scottish captain. Tested Neuer at 1-0.

Hendo N/A – Taken off within the first fifteen minutes with a twisted ankle.

Milner 6 – Gave away the ball too often in the final third for me.

Gini 6 – Very quiet first half. Better second.

Salah 7 – Wasted two good opportunities in the second period by being too selfish. However, his pass to Mané for the third goal was absolutely sensational.

Bobby 6.5 – Not his best game. Poor in possession during the first 45. Another who did better after half time though.

Mané 8.5 – What can you say? Exceptional first goal, ends the tie with his second. One of the best in the world on current form.

Subs

Fabinho 7 – Our best central midfielder, once he came on. Looked at risk after his booking, though.

Origi 7 – Impressed coming on for the last ten.

Lallana N/A – did he get a cruyff in? Not sure he did actually…
