Can you tell the summer transfer window is slowly approaching once again?
Remarkably, it was reported on Thursday that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently met with the agent of Merseyside rivals Everton’s Brazilian striker Richarlison.
It’s not often that the neighbours do business together and it would appear as though that trend is set to continue. While there’s certainly no denying that there’s quality in The Toffees’ 21-year-old attacker, this story broken by Brazilian news outlet UOL Esporte seems to have little traction when you delve into it a bit.
While the links were nothing short of implausible, a few local newspapers jumped to deny this latest gossip – the Liverpool Echo specifically rubbished these rumours as they reported that Everton officials apparently laughed off the alleged links of Richarlison swapping blue for red.
The Brazilian even took to Twitter himself late Thursday night just to be sure to put the rumours to bed as he simply wrote “happy” accompanied with a picture of him kissing the Everton badge.
And, if somehow all that didn’t convince you that the transfer wasn’t ever happening, it’s said the Toffees will only entertain offers upwards of £70m for their club’s joint-top goalscorer… need I comment why this would be terrible business?
Yes, it’s safe to say this one isn’t happening anytime soon, but – and I’m playing the devil’s advocate here – let’s entertain the prospect of it for a moment.
As mentioned earlier, Richarlison is still only 21 years of age, he has the bare bones of a potentially prolific forward for seasons to come while still being a quality option in the current day.
He’s the type of player I’m sure Klopp would love in his squad as, at least when I have watched him, he shows that he’s full of hunger to chase lost causes in the press while also possessing the skill on the attack to create and finish chances quite well for a player his age.
The Brazilian currently sits on 12 goals in the Premier League in 29 total appearances – a decent return for a player in an Everton setup – and I’d personally be quite content with Richarlison as an option on the bench to replace the soon-to-be departing Daniel Sturridge.
Plus, let’s be honest, can you ever have too many Brazilians in your team?
Perhaps another catalyst in this transfer speculation comes from a few Instagram posts this past December from a few members of the current Liverpool team.
Pictures from Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino’s wife’s birthday party did the rounds on Instagram this past December showing Richarlison arm in arm with a few of his Merseyside counterparts including Alisson, Fabinho, and Alberto Moreno.
So, perhaps there may be some element of persuasion involved from the Liverpool camp to the Everton man to make the switch after all? …probably not.
While Liverpool’s Brazilian contingent and Jurgen Klopp allegedly lay the groundwork for this most unlikely of transfer rumours, I still think this one is dead so I think it’s best to close the book on this one and move on.
