Liverpool fans on social media have voiced their approval of a move for Ryan Bertrand this summer, as rumours circulate linking the Reds with the England international.
The 29-year-old looks set to be moved by Southampton in this transfer window, as manager Ralph Hassenhuttl reportedly prefers the younger Matt Targett – also linked with Liverpool in recent days – as first choice at left-back.
Liverpool are on the lookout for a new left-back as Alberto Moreno will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract on July 1st. This leaves the Reds short on cover for Andy Robertson, and the supporters appear to be pleased at the prospect of signing an experienced Premier League player as backup.
Twitter user @kloppite85 claimed the Saints defender would be “a really good backup” and described a potential move as “clever business,” while @red_ray7 said he would “like him as a backup and starter in domestic cups”.
However, @anfield_buzz questioned whether he would be happy with taking a bit-part role at Anfield, considering he has no realistic chance of usurping Robertson as first choice except for in the event of an injury to the Scot.
Bertrand’s experience as a Champions League winner with Chelsea is said to be attractive to the Madrid-based club, while a move to the Wanda Metropolitano would provide the player with one last chance of playing regular football in Europe as he approaches his twilight years.
