I can guarantee you’ll see no funnier thing than Jurgen Klopp screaming that in a Rocky-esque manner in his post-match interview on BT Sport.
But it was well-deserved. The Spaniard has come in for Alisson in unexpected circumstances, but has done really well so far. Against Chelsea, he made some impressive and important saves in the game, before denying Tammy Abraham from the spot in the shootout to win the UEFA Super Cup for Liverpool.
Alright, it’s not exactly a hugely prestigious competition, but it’s a second trophy to add to the cabinet in Klopp’s time at Anfield. It feels good, especially considering the performance wasn’t that great. To grind it out and still lift the cup at the end showed real character.
Anyway, enough rambling. Here’s how the player rated in Istanbul…
Adrian: 10 (pre-penalty shootout 6)
The new addition started from the off tonight as opposed to coming on off the bench. With big boots to fill following Alisson’s injury, a solid full debut was needed. He was at fault for the Chelsea penalty after bringing down Abrahams. Was it a soft? Yes. Did they score it? Yes…
Apart from that, no spectacular saves to be noted but he was blameless for Chelsea’s first goal. That probably put him at a 5.5, but an incredible save from Giroud’s first half effort which would have been ruled out anyway for an offside decision earns himself an extra 0.5. All of that means nothing in the end when you save the winning penalty in a shootout, straight up to a 10. No arguments.
Gomez’s presence at right back showed Trent’s absence. Although not known for his attacking prowess, he still lacked any attacking threat whatsoever, stumbling over the ball here and there. Defending could only be better yet if it wasn’t for his sheer pace to make up for his own mistakes he would have gotten a 3.
Thankfully he does have that ability and defended well overall, but was caught sleeping for Chelsea’s goal. He moved over to left back in extra time and played considerably better.A poor performance overall but worth noting he is made to partner van Dijk rather than linkup with Salah on that right hand side
An inconsistent performance from Cameroonian. At times outshone can Dijk with help from those long, long legs. Yet the next phase of play would see him spoon a ball out of play or try to set up a Chelsea goal. Some big challenges and did spend most of the game bullying Pulisic. No doubt big Joel took his lunch money during the 90 mins.
Expect nothing less than a mistake-free game from van Dijk. Some crucial blocks, important tackles and nearly had a goal. If it was any other CB it would be higher than a 7.5, but because it’s Virg he has to be harshly marked.
In typical Robertson fashion, he spent the game bombing forwards and backwards, also saving the day here and there denying a clear cut chance by out muscling Pedro who was through on goal, well until Robbo said no. A good performance but no teasing balls into the box in which would of been his perfect opportunity to equal Trent’s total assists this season in their competition.
Best of a bad bunch out of the midfielders in the first half but put did add some force to our attacks with some fantastic crosses and helped the struggling Gomez on that right hand side at times. The midfield lacked shape especially defensively and some of that blame has to go to Henderson in that three-man midfield.
Not the best of games by Fabinho’s standards, dived in too early at times leaving the defence exposed but did link the transitions from the defence to attack. Not a stellar performance but certainly not costly.
Pretty poor in attacking and equally poor in defending but at 33 years old, what else can you expect of him? He obviously provided a fantastic work rate all whilst on the field but his technical ability lets him down.
Didn’t grab a goal but looked dangerous all game, he’s playing similar to Suarez at the minuet but without the all important goals. Weaving in and out, nutmegging players for fun. Showed fantastic strength and pace as per usual and is looking very dangerous this campaign, another 30 goal season is definitely on the cards.
What would we do without him… He scored both our goals, although the first being a tap in, the second was a sublime finish into the top corner. Looked a threat all game and he has only just returned from international duty the other weak. What a season he could have.
Wasted out wide and couldn’t get into the game. First start for 16 months so we will let him of light. Did show bursts of 17/18 but needs to get a couple more games under his belt.
Firmino : 8
Without this half-time substitution, the game would have ended at 90. Provided the all important assist for our first goal and had the Chelsea defence on their toes for the rest of the match. A special player and is instrumental to this LFC side ticking.
He should have started, he’s becoming a key player in this LFC side. Showed his ability to do everything you want in a full-back, could a transition to midfield bring out the best of him?
No Origi-esque moment this time.
