The visit of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester to Anfield was always going to be a tough fixture.
The romance of any boss competing with a former club always carries potential for upsets and difficulties. Moreover, his Leicester side are a very, very good team, one of the four or five best in the league.
So when James Maddison levelled the scoring late on, Reds could be forgiven for thinking, “it’s just one of those days”. However, Sadio Mané’s brilliance and determination bought Liverpool an injury time penalty, which James Milner coolly converted.
This was more “one of those days” that the Kop have come to expect in recent years, watching one of the best sides in world football with an unbelievable spirit and resilience, particularly at home.
The most important figure from today’s match is eight wins from eight, but I’ll give you some ratings anyway! After a reminder of my system…
Adrián 7.5 — Made a superb stop before Çağlar Söyüncü was flagged offside, and brilliantly denied Jamie Vardy one-on-one. Possibly could have done better for the goal, although it is never easy to react to a deflection.
Trent 7.5 — Best player on the pitch first half and could have supplied multiple assists, but tired late on.
Degsy 8 — Excellent performance in his first league start of the season. A performance that reminds us that the Croat is a top player when on form and focused.
Big Virg 7.5 — Dominated for most of the game but possibly let James Maddison run through too easily for the equaliser.
Robbo 8 — Unbelievable fitness, bombing up and down the left. Was unlucky not to score after linking up with Firmino.
Gini 6.5 — Started well but drifted and the decision to sub the Dutchman was probably the correct one.
Fabinho 7 — One of his less dominant first halves but started winning every loose ball in midfield in the second.
Milner 7.5 — Started very poorly, but a sensational assist acted as a catalyst for an improved second period, culminating with his match-winning penalty.
Sadio 8 — Made a brilliant slide tackle, tracking back. Scored a brilliant goal, showcasing elite composure. Did brilliantly to win a crucial penalty. Probably the best player in the squad, on current form. Man of the match.
Bobby 6.5 — Did brilliantly when linking up deep, but was often wasteful in the final third. Very nearly made enough contact to convert Alexander-Arnold’s first half cross.
Mo 6.5 — Equally wasteful in and around the Leicester box. Was exceptional with his back to the impressive Söyüncü in the second half, though.
Divvy 7 — He really might be the best impact sub in the world. Always makes a difference when coming on.
Hendo 6.5 — Injected a little bit of energy as the midfield tired.
Lallana N/A — On for the best part of two minutes, but won an important header in the buildup to the penalty. Well done Adam!
