Podcast guest Jay Riley stunned hosts Mick Moran and Jay Pearson by including central defenders Mamadou Sakho and Martin Škrtel in a list of his worst XI to have played for Liverpool FC in the Premier League.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Kopite Podcast, Riley described the latter as “an absolute car crash” as he selected the Slovakian ahead of worthy candidates like Sebastián Coates, Bjørn Tore Kvarme and Sotirios Kyrgiakos.
Each of the trio took it in turns to select a team of the worst players to have represented the club in the English top flight, with the likes of Paul Konchesky and Sean Dundee featuring heavily.
Riley, though, believes that Sakho and Škrtel are also in a similar category.
He said: “I’ve gone for a couple of surprise ones — Sakho and Škrtel. I just thought that they were both accidents waiting to happen.
“I think Škrtel had one very good season. He ended up getting the Player of the Season [award] which was crazy because the amount of mistakes he used to make in terms of giving away penalties and pulling people in the box — he was an absolute car crash for me.”
The Frenchman Sakho also didn’t make much of an impression upon our guest.
Riley said: “I blame him for the Gerrard slip, I really do. He put a terrible ball into Gerrard, put him under pressure and then obviously the rest is history.
“He was so over-hyped and overrated. We paid £18million for him. He sort of divided opinion and I know a lot of Liverpool fans who thought he was great, but I just thought he was horrendous. He was the Djimi Traoré of centre-half.”
