RATINGS | Liverpool 5-2 Everton: Changes in midfield and attack breathe new life into rampant Reds

This wasn’t the Liverpool side that most expected to see, but the backup brigade produced the goods with surprise starters Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri contributing three of the Reds’ five goals against the Toffees.

After a couple of complaints about Liverpool being boring in recent wins, the Reds succeeded in entertaining in the first Merseyside Derby of the season.

The five goals scored by Jürgen Klopp’s side at Anfield did not flatter them, although the two conceded were equally fair enough.

Marco Silva’s Everton were never going to be able to go toe-to-toe with this Liverpool side, and that became apparent as the home team raced to a 2-0 lead early on. Sadio Mané the creative key.

The tie became very open as the Blues looked for a route back into the game, and Michael Keane’s strike was quickly cancelled out by a brilliant Divock Origi goal, following a raking pass from Dejan Lovren.

The half ended like a basketball game, 4-2 by the interval. Mané registering for the home side.

The second half was more controlled though, and a few Everton chances were outnumbered by the opportunities for Klopp’s team. Eventually though, substitute Roberto Firmino set up Gini Wijnaldum who finished the game with the fifth. Liverpool’s highest-scoring display this season, and against the Ev at that.

Here are your ratings, after a quick reminder of my ratings system:

Starting XI

Aaaaaadrián! 7 — Little he could do for either Everton goal, but distributed the ball very well.

Trent 7.5 — Unbelievable pass in the build up to Shaqiri’s goal. Impressive until he tired late on.

Degsy 7 — Poor for Richarlison’s goal and the late Kean chance, but also turned a corner behind brilliantly with his back to goal and found Origi for a sensational assist. Very up-and-down from the Croat.

Big Virg 7 — Slightly less impressive than the Dutchman’s last two man-of-the-match-worthy performances, but cut the ball out time and again.

Robbo 7 — Slightly disappointing first-half. Improved, particularly defensively, after the break.

Gini 7 — Great finish for the fifth. Probably failed to prevent the game becoming as open as it did, in Jürgen’s eyes.

Milly 7 — Occasionally giveaway of cheap possession was evened out by some excellent recovery tackles to nullify Evertonian counter-attacks.

Shaq 7.5 — He’s alive, and he’s good too! Despite floating in and out of the tie, the Swiss was a danger whenever he was on the ball for the Reds and his darting run earned him his side’s second. Sent in a few dangerous deliveries, too.

La La Land 6 — A couple of delightful touches but it felt inevitable and wise that Lallana be replaced by Henderson, in order for Liverpool to control the tie.

Sadio 8.5 — First-half display was as good as you’ll see this season. Exquisite pass for Origi’s first was followed up by another assist when the Senegalese fed Shaqiri. Perfect first-time finish on his ‘weaker’ left foot, as well. Did waste two one-on-ones in the second half to deny himself the match ball. Nonetheless, man of the match.

Divvy 8.5 — Technique for his first goal was good, but it was sensational for his second. Divock Origi is more than just a good impact player with an eye for goal. He would lead the line every game for most teams in the Premier League.

Subs

Hendo 7 — Great pass to send Mané clear deserved an assist.

Bobby 7.5 — Delightful turn before feeding Wijnaldum for the fifth.

JoGo N/A — Broke-up play once or twice.
