Gomez continues fantastic form with man-of-the-match performance against Wolves

Joe Gomez looks more and more like he may have retaken the spot next to Virgil van Dijk in defence after his latest stellar showing against Wolves.

Liverpool beat Wolves 1-0 to regain their 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. Sadio Mané scored the only goal of the game after VAR overturned the on-field referee’s decision to disallow the goal.

With the lack of goals during Sunday’s game at Anfield the defenders stood out more than the attackers — the performances of the central defenders in particular. The centre-back partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez has been phenomenal since the duo have regularly started together.

When playing together, the pair have contributed to six clean sheets in as many games.

While you might expect the Dutchman to impress more than his English counterpart, Gomez has been able to match the performance levels of van Dijk. The No.12 deservedly picked up the man of the match award against Wolves.

Gomez won 100% of his tackles against Midlands side as well as winning five out of six duels. He also managed two interceptions and cleared the ball twice throughout the game. The centre-half also made five ball recoveries in the 90 minutes.

The 22-year-old was calm and composed on the ball and had a passing accuracy of 90% in the game. It was a fantastic performance from the young Englishman.

Joe Gomez has had an up and down Liverpool career so far. He went from being first choice alongside van Dijk to being fourth in the pecking order at one point. His performances in the last six games have been excellent and he has made it harder for Joël Matip or Dejan Lovren to stake their claim in the team.

Next up for Gomez and his Liverpool teammates is the visit of Sheffield United to Anfield, where he will hope to continue the clean sheet streak that he and the rest of the side are currently on.
