RATINGS | Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool: Reds shaky but do enough for the win

This destroy-all-in-its-path, fabulously ruthless Liverpool machine rolls on. There will be better performances this season — probably even this month — but it’s a sixth consecutive league clean sheet, and 20 wins from 21 games for Jürgen Klopp’s giants.

The second half was nervier than usual for this Liverpool team. For once, as the league leaders hung on, mistakes crept into the Anfield side’s performance, and opposition chances arrived with regularity.

That has rarely been the case in the last two seasons.

When this team is winning, though, they tend to see the game out calmly. However, with some thanks to Alisson Becker’s brilliance, the Reds did enough for the three points, and ultimately Roberto Firmino’s first-half goal was the decisive moment of the game.

Starting XI

Ali 8 — As Gary Neville put it, “he’s made a couple of these look easy.” Even when Giovani Lo Celso dragged wide late on, his finish was made all the more difficult by Alisson springing across his line.

Trent 7 — Not as sensational as he has been recently with the ball at his feet, but a very mature performance defensively.

JoGo 6.5 — Young Joe’s worst performance of his recent brilliant run of form, but in some ways that is testament to the level he has set.

Virgil 7.5 — Phenomenal tackle when Dele Alli almost broke through.

Robbo 6 — Passing was off, at times.

Ox 6.5 — General interplay was impressive, but never quite found the final ball.

Hendo 7.5 — Arguably the best player on the pitch in the second half.

Gini 7.5 — Excellent throughout, until he almost gifted Son Heung-min an equaliser.

Mo 7.5 — Tireless display, with some very intelligent passing, like when setting up Firmino’s winner.

Bobby 8 — Brilliant touch and finish for the only goal of the game. Work-rate superb as ever. Man of the match.

Sadio 7.5 — Defensively everywhere, making the most tackles of any player on the pitch. Was very surprised that Klopp substituted the Senegalese moments after he had sprinted back to break up a Spurs counter-attack on the halfway line.

La La Land 7.5 — Absolutely fantastic. Broke up play and kept possession when others were failing to.

Divvy 7 — Almost netted after beating three Spurs men.

Shaq N/A — First touch was an incisive cross that Gini Wijnaldum could have headed home.

Don Kopleone

Scouse, not Sicilian.
