RATINGS | Wolves 1-2 Liverpool: Resilient Reds do just enough for another win

The performance was perhaps not at the level it needed to be, but the end result was still the same. Don Kopleone runs the rule over the Liverpool players’ individual performances.

Wolves away was always going to be a tough proposition. No-one doubted for a second that the likes of Raúl Jiménez and Adama Traoré would cause all sorts of problems, but Liverpool perhaps found it tougher than expected at Molineux.

While the Reds led deservedly at half-time through Jordan Henderson’s headed effort, the hosts dominated the second half and it looked inevitable that they would go on to win the game after Jiménez’s equaliser.

Alas, thankfully, this was not the case, as Roberto Firmino fired home with five minutes to go to atone for a golden opportunity spurned just a few minutes earlier.

It was far from Liverpool’s best performance of the season — it might even have been one of the worst — but the resilience to stay in the game despite wave after wave of relentless Wolves pressure and then take the opportunity at the end to take the win was incredible.

The mental strength of this side is well-documented, but Jürgen Klopp’s men continue to provide case study after case study of what a team that believes they will win every game can do.

Here’s how the players got on:

Starting XI

Ali 7 — Will be disappointed his run of clean sheets is over, but could do nothing for the Jiménez’s perfectly-placed equaliser.

Trent 6.5 — Electric start to the game, but reduced influence as the game wore on.

JoGo 7 — Tough game dealing with a variety of runners from deep, but did well enough.

Big Virg 8 — Flawless, nay, perfect first-half. Dominated everyone and everything. Slightly less impressive in the second half though, including a misplaced header (?!). Still man of the match, again.

Robbo 6.5 — Tough afternoon against Adama Traoré, but that’s never an easy duel, is it? A victim of Mané’s early departure through injury, as he didn’t get the same defensive cover after that.

Ox 7 — Unlucky not to be slipped in by Salah, just before his substitution.

Hendo 7.5 — Goal and assist from the Liverpool captain in a tight game. Stevie Gerrard would be proud.

Gini 7 — Never dropped the intensity. Not quite the level he was at on Sunday, but a key role in central midfield.

Mo 6.5 — Exceptional in some aspects, but shot at the wrong times and badly.

Bobby 7.5 — Started brightly, faded a little bit, and then woke up late on. Culminating in a crucial (is it? Who knows at this point) winner.

Sadio 6.5 — Looked like he would get a goal today, before taken off. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

Subs

Taki 6 — Couple of nice touches, but not enough influence on the game. Early days, though.

Fabs 6 — Did not look completely back to full fitness.

Divvy N/A — Origi cameo copy and paste.
