In Kiev two years ago, Liverpool lost a Champions League final following a couple of huge errors from then-goalkeeper Loris Karius. Fast forward a year, and the Reds were celebrating in Madrid after an iconic performance from the newly-signed Alisson Becker.
With Alisson in goal tonight, Liverpool probably progress to the Champions League quarter-finals. As it was, an Adrián howler — mis-kicking an easy back-pass — undid a Liverpool lead, founded upon goals by Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino.
He then allowed a Marcos Llorente shot to sneak in at his near post, one that Liverpool’s regular No.1 would likely have saved.
You need quality back-up all over the pitch, but the one player you can generally rely on as fit first-choice is the one player who wears gloves. Jan Oblak was the best player on the night, seeing his Atlético side through with a string of superb saves.
