For forty minutes at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool were brilliant. Their press suffocated Chelsea who couldn’t break out of their half, and although few clear-cut chances had fallen the Reds’ way, it seemed inevitable that Jürgen Klopp’s visitors were heading towards three points.
At that point, it felt like the home team had survived the storm and were beginning to gain a foothold in the game. But as more blue bodies crept forward, Jordan Henderson found a superb pass to release Sadio Mané.
The Senegalese was brought down by Andreas Christensen who was, after a VAR check, sent off by referee Paul Tierney.
With a man advantage for the second half, Liverpool looked to quickly establish a lead, and soon enough a Roberto Firmino cross was flicked home by the superb Mané.
Minutes later, the Reds’ No.10 showed brilliant determination to force the under-pressure Kepa Arrizabalaga into a mistake to make it 2-0.
New signing Thiago showcased wonderful technique during his 45-minute debut, but was adjudged to have felled Timo Werner in the penalty box late on. Alisson Becker, however, pulled off a crucial save to seal a second win in succession and Liverpool’s first clean sheet of the new campaign.
Don Kopleone, with your ratings from Stamford Bridge…
Ali 8.5 – Finally saved a penalty (!) staring Jorginho down, and following the ball. Very good in possession, too.
Trent 7.5 – One of the Reds’ best performers in the first half. Failed to find target with either of two free-kicks.
Fabs 8.5 – Filling in at centre-back the Brazilian did himself proud. His positioning was a little suspect when Timo Werner found space in the first half, but on each occasion Fab redeemed himself with two excellent tackles.
Big Virg 8 – Faultless, but largely a bystander. Not sure Chelsea ever made him commit to a tackle. But then that’s just because this man has set *the* standard.
Robbo 7 – Delivery wasn’t at its best, but defensively sound throughout. Saw lots of the ball.
Naby 7 – Possibly less exciting but more mature performance from the Guinean, taking fewer risks in his passing. Unlucky to be brought off.
Hendo 7.5 – Very good first half, bar one stupid push on Werner which gave Chelsea a dangerous free-kick. Brilliant ball into Mané’s path to initiate the sending off.Embed from Getty Images
Gini 7 – A better performance from the Dutchman, particularly as Liverpool suffocated Chelsea early on. Should have turned home when Salah’s late shot was pushed into his path.
Mo 7 – Constant threat, trying some delicious switches of play and linking up well with Firmino in the build-up to Mané’s opener.
Bobby 6.5 – Great cross for goal one, press was superb as ever. Only complaint was his touch was slightly off.
Sadio 8.5 – The key to the three moments that defined the game. Powerful burst led to the Christensen red, a great header opened the scoring and his superb work-rate forced the second. Man of the match.
ThiaGOAT 7 – Some absolutely gorgeous passes from the debutant, breaking the lines with incredible regularity. He was unlucky to give away the penalty but did overcomplicate things once or twice in a bid to impress. Quality was evident, however, especially considering he’s barely even met his teammates.Embed from Getty Images
Milly 6.5 – Nothing too difficult, but hardly conceded possession at all. Par of the course.
Taki N/A – Will almost certainly start against Lincoln City on Thursday.
Never miss a thing
