Liverpool’s squad depth looks greater than it has at any point in Jürgen Klopp’s Anfield reign so far, with this reality on show as the Reds romped to victory in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.
You don’t need a match report here – with nine goals to detail, it would take quite some time – but the Reds were both good going forward and incredibly clinical as they stormed to a 4-0 half-time lead over League One’s Lincoln City.
At that point surprise starter Virgil van Dijk was relieved from his duties, and his absence post-break resulted in a far more porous Reds defence.
Nonetheless, a win by five goals is never anything but a great result, and some of the Champions’ squad players really took their chance tonight.
Your ratings, per Don Kopleone:
Adriáááááán 7 – did brilliantly when left one-on-one at the start of the second half, but the Spaniard failed to cover himself in glory for Lincoln’s second.
Neco 5.5 – comfortably Liverpool’s worst player on the night. Decision making not there yet, as seen in the build up to Lincoln’s opener.
The other Williams 6.5 – superb first half of his maiden senior start, featuring an immense raking pass which led to Jones’ first goal. Not as impressive without Virgil alongside him in the second half, as to be expected, with Adrián saving him after one horribly sliced clearance.
Big Virg 7 – can’t remember him really needing to do anything, just like on Sunday. Liverpool’s defence fell apart after the Dutchman’s departure, though.
Zeus 7 – not everything worked for the Greek debutant but his eagerness to inject tempo into attacks really impressed. A good first showing.
CJ 8 – first goal was a peach, and while second took a deflection, he earned it with a good turn to find space.
Marko 7 – Liverpool regularly benefited from the Serb’s added midfield muscle. Dallied on ball too long at times, but was never really caught out, with a deflected goal just reward for a strong showing.
Power Cube 7.5 – unbelievable free-kick was followed up with some incisive passing.Embed from Getty Images
Harvey 6.5 – quieter than some of the other youngsters.
Taki 8.5 – first goal was sensationally taken. Nice follow up for his second. Movement brilliant, and superb release into Divock’s path for the seventh. Great performance, which makes you think Liverpool might have found someone who can fill in for Bobby. Man of the match.
Divvy 7 – often on the periphery of the game, but a lovely knock down set up Jones’ first, and he found his goal late on.
Fabinho 6 – defence dropped off after the Brazilian replaced Virgil, though no fault could be attributed to the Liverpool no.3 for that. Could have adopted a more assertive role to guide debutant Rhys Williams, however.
Jota 6.5 – nearly found the bottom corner after great link-up play with Naby Keïta. Would have wanted a goal, though.
Keita 7 – onto the pitch and quickly in control of proceedings.
Never miss a thing
