Jürgen Klopp is a miracle worker. Liverpool were missing arguably six first-choice starters today, but his patchwork side looked like title winners.
Brendan Rodgers’ returned to Anfield with a Leicester side that has already upset top-six contenders Arsenal and Manchester City, this season. Both those victories came on the road, in fact.
But from the first whistle, Liverpool looked in control and were creating chances regularly.
The Reds’ first was somewhat fortunate. Former-Manchester United defender Johnny Evans completely misjudged a header to give the home side a deserved lead.
The pressure continued, and a fantastic team move was finished with Diogo Jota heading home from an inch-perfect Andrew Robertson cross. That goal sees the Portuguese international become the first Liverpool player ever to score in all four of his first four league games.
And Liverpool continued to create, but while the game sat at 2-0 nerves remained.
Roberto Firmino was played through by Jota, but somehow failed to make it three, the goal-line technology deciding he was 1cm from settling the points.
But, it was Firmino who ultimately finished things off. A header from a James Milner corner bouncing past Kasper Schmeichel.
A much-appreciated goal for a man lacking in confidence, and a huge three points for a team that seems full of it.
Your ratings, after a great display.
Ali 8.5 – This high a rating may come as a surprise. Ali wasn’t as tested as he will be in some games – but you could argue that the Brazilian’s performance today was perfect. Speed off his line, distribution, authority all so, so good.
Milly 7.5 – Was targeted and, in some ways, stretched defensively while at right-back, but passing display was superb. Two assists from corner kicks, too. Top stuff from the Reds’ captain on the day.
Matip 7.5 – Flawless first half. Couple of silly giveaways after the break just prevent him from a “man of the match” display, but the Cameroonian was generally imperious.
Fab 8 – Possibly my favourite Fab display at centre-back. Improved feel for the position is proven by Vardy’s lack of involvement.
Robbo 8 – Often scintillating, incredible delivery for the Jota header. Understandably tired a little towards the end.
CJ 7.5 – Improvement in speed of release on-ball, and won some key tackles. It’s nearly there for CJ, just needs to make sure to cut out the occasional lapses in concentration.
Gini 7.5 – I really like Gini in this deeper position. Busied himself nicely.
Naby 8 – Was arguably the best player on the pitch for fifty minutes, then pulled his hamstring, on the back of two ninety-minute displays over the international break. Gutting.
Diogo 8.5 – Superb movement and finish for the all-important second. Should have had an assist when Firmino somehow failed to turn home. Looking like a quite stunning piece of business for Liverpool. Man of the Match.Embed from Getty Images
Bobby 7.5 – Firmino was more involved throughout today, with some genius link-up play, even if it looked as though he was cursed with that shot-post-shot-goalline debacle. Headed finish a massive relief for the Brazilian. Messed up a couple of five yard passes again, though!
Sadio 7.5 – The Senegalese will be frustrated that he did not manage to score, but his general performance was a high quality one. Wesley Fofana has excelled early on in his Leicester career, but really struggled to deal with Sadio tonight.
Neco 7 – A promising display, barring one stupid Cruyff turn, playing himself into trouble.
Taki 6.5 – Decent cameo.
Divvy N/A – Don’t remember Origi touching the ball, in all honesty.
Never miss a thing
