In recent seasons, Wolverhampton Wanderers have provided as stern a test to ‘top six’ opposition as anyone in the Premier League. Nuno Espírito-Santo’s side are difficult to break down, loaded with quality and very well drilled. That was not the case today, though, and Liverpool sauntered home to a 4-0 win as fans returned to Anfield.
The Reds took the lead after former player, Conor Coady, suffered a lapse in concentration, which Mo Salah took advantage of to open the scoring. But just before half-time Coady thought he had redeemed himself by earning a penalty.
VAR correctly overruled the on-pitch decision, however, with replays showing no contact from Sadio Mané on the Wolves captain. Coady was then again denied after the break, with a superb tackle from Fabinho starting a chain of events which culminated in Gini Wijnaldum doubling the home side’s advantage.
Two soon became three as Joël Matip headed home, and a terrific team move saw the visitors’ Nélson Semedo divert the ball into his own net for four. A brilliant result for the Reds against an opposition who are very rarely beaten this comfortably.
Your ratings, as Liverpool joined Spurs at the top of the table:
Kelleher 7.5 – very pleasing Premier League debut, with the Irish youngster’s strong late stop to deny substitute Rayan Aït-Nouri acting to preserve his clean sheet.
Neco 6.5 – silly mistake led to early booking, but recovered well, with a calmer display.
Matip 8 – in a classy vein of form at the moment, and was aerially dominant throughout the contest, highlighted by a stooping header to make it 3-0.
Fab 8 – tackle to deny Coady at 1-0 proved crucial. Looking more and more natural at centre-back.
Robbo 8 – another brilliant display. Copy and paste.
Gini 8 – superb finish, just as I was ready to curse his decision to shoot! The Dutch international continues his great form in the middle of the park, and should finally be given a rest this midweek. Chucked on the armband for the last ten minutes, too.
Hendo 8 – huge display from the Reds’ captain, starting numerous counter attacks with desire and intelligence. Fortunate to be given assist for Salah’s opener, but the pass that led to Wijnaldum’s strike was perfectly measured.
Jones 7 – bright and tidy throughout, albeit slightly quieter than his midfield companions.
Salah 8.5 – goal will be attributed to the Coady error, but Mo deserves credit for his work-rate and anticipation. The Egyptian’s delightful cross was nodded home by Matip. Man of the Match.
Bobby 7.5 – the most ‘Bobbyish’ performance we’ve seen in some time. Not much in terms of end product, but Firmino’s flair often stood out for the home side. Looks more confident, suddenly.
Mané 7.5 – Sadio Mané is just a really, really good footballer. The Senegalese felt like the most dangerous player on the pitch in the first half, and was very unlucky to ultimately not find himself on the scoresheet. Thought he had the Reds’ fourth, but the ball was seemingly turned home by a Wolves player.
Trent 7.5 – needed little more than five minutes to find himself back among the assists. Superb cross.
Jota 6.5 – looked desperate to score against his former team, but never had an opportunity.
Naby 6.5 – great to see him back.
