Fulham 1-1 Liverpool: Ratings as Reds struggle to find attacking rhythm at Craven Cottage

DON KOPLEONE rates the players as Liverpool struggle to find their way against a spritely Fulham side in London.

Even the most optimistic Liverpool fan would have to concede today’s draw at Craven Cottage represents two points dropped.

Fulham have had a poor start to the season, but dominated an opening half-hour which was as disappointing as any I can remember under Jürgen Klopp. It is extremely rare that Liverpool are overrun in midfield, but that was the case early on today.

In fact, the visitors’ goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, who was back fit after a spell out of the team, kept Klopp’s side in the contest, with three key saves.

The Reds’ performance did pick up, though. And it would possibly be harsh to criticise them for not coming away with three points after a much improved second-half display. There was more intensity, more purpose and more game intelligence.

Ultimately, though, the one saving grace of this result is merely that it came on the back of Liverpool’s title rivals all dropping points. Wednesday’s Anfield visit of Tottenham Hotspur remains a crucial game in the title race.

Your ratings, as Liverpool once again dropped points on the road…

Starting XI

Ali 8.5 – Liverpool would have lost today if Alisson weren’t fit. Kept the Reds in the game in the first half.

Trent 6 – Started woefully but became a greater threat as the game grew on. Stopped hitting long and started driving up the pitch.

Matip 5.5 – Won a couple of key headers but really struggled with Fulham’s pace in behind. Injury is far from ideal.

Fab 7 – Made some crucial challenges as Fulham stormed through the Reds’ midfield early on. Possibly fortunate with the penalty decision.

Robbo 6.5 – One of the visitors’ better performers during a dismal first period. Lucky not to be punished when dallying on a clearance just after the break, however.

CJ 7 – Horrible start to the match with regular giveaways in possession but the youngster’s positivity in midfield was crucial to the improvement in the second half. Fulham ‘keeper Areola denied him a brilliant solo goal.

Hendo 6 – While Liverpool can generally count on their skipper to assert calm and sensibility, Henderson forced the ball long far too often today, when that route was clearly not working out. Performed admirably in defensive areas when dropped to centre-back, though.

Gini 6 – Looked tired, unsurprisingly.

Mo 6.5 – Brilliant first-half swivel was fired wide. Penalty was saveable, but crucially squirmed home. The Egyptian was definitely not always as involved as he’d like to be today, however.

Bobby 6.5 – Some bright moments, including a delightful flick into Henderson’s path before he was denied by Areola. But, the Brazilian could not keep the ball in the first-half period in which Liverpool were all over the place.

Sadio 6.5 – Almost anonymous first-half. Thankfully the Senegalese woke up for the second period, beating his man with ease at times. Seven Premier League games without a goal is frustrating, however.

Subs

Taki 6 – Some nice moments but the overwhelming feeling that Minamino is too lightweight remains prominent.

Neco 6.5 – Was never going to offer the same offensive threat as Trent, but did nothing wrong.

Divvy N/A – I had *that* feeling that this was Divock’s day. Instead, his cameo was a poor one.
