Liverpool 1-1 West Brom: Ratings as Big Sam’s Baggies frustrate wasteful Reds

Don Kopleone gives his ratings after West Brom snatch a late equaliser after the Reds fail to build on early Sadio Mané goal

There’s not much to be said about today’s game. Liverpool were poor, in all honesty, after a very promising first twenty 20. Sam Allardyce sat his West Brom team as deep as was physically possible, and the hosts’ early tempo was drained out of them.

The visitors gained a foothold in the game in the second half of the contest, and perhaps Jürgen Klopp should have been more pro-active in addressing the change in momentum. As it was, after Alisson had done his best to save the three points for the Reds, it was a set-piece that the Brazilian could do nothing about which cost Klopp’s side.

Disappointing, but luckily there are only three days’ rest before Liverpool can put this game to rights.

FIRST XI

Ali 7.5 – stood tall to deny Karlan Grant, swept up well whenever necessary.

Trent 6.5 – never found the right delivery, and free-kick efforts weren’t quite of his very best standard. Some neat link-up, however.

Matip 7.5 – won everything that came near him having set up the Mané goal. Game changed the moment he limped off. Fab 7- couple of shaky miscues but generally solid.

Robbo 7 – although he began as Liverpool’s greatest attacking threat, the Scot failed to ever quite find the right final ball, especially in the second half.

Gini 6.5 – patrolled the midfield patiently, but breaking down a defensive block is never going to play to Gini’s strengths.

Hendo 6 – tried to force the long ball too often.

CJ 5.5 – started brightly but as frustration set in the 19 year old tried to over-complicate things, as seen with the giveaway that led to West Brom’s equaliser, via a corner.

Salah 6 – the Egyptian never really found his way into the game. Could have done better with one header that popped over the bar.

Bobby 7.5 – Liverpool’s brightest spark in attack. Involved in a lot of the Reds’ brightest moments. The Brazilian did everything right when Johnstone flicked his late header wide.

Mané 6.5 – unbelievable chest control led to the opener, but the Senegalese flicked in-and-out of the game when you wanted him to take control of it.

Never miss a thing!

Subs:

Rhys 6 – allowed Grant in behind too easily for the counter-attacking chance.

Ox 7 – sensational delivery was almost turned home by Firmino. Turned over possession too easily, though.

Divock N/A – didn’t touch the ball.

Special referee rating:

Kevin Friend 4 – Friend is routinely one of the worst officials in the Premier League, and seemed to get every decision wrong today.
