Newcastle United 0-0 Liverpool: Ratings as Reds fail to score in bore draw

DON KOPLEONE rates the Reds on another frustrating evening where more Premier League points were dropped.

Of course, the headline here is that Liverpool ended 2020 by dropping more points.

On a chilly evening in Newcastle, the Reds failed to bounce back from the recent disappointment against West Bromwich Albion with a win – although it wasn’t for a lack of chances.

Mohamed Salah very rarely fails to score when presented with such opportunities that he had today, and Roberto Firmino will equally feel disappointed not to have registered on the scoresheet.

Ultimately, though, even when Thiago Alcântara returned to the fold to up the tempo, Liverpool just could not beat Karl Darlow in the Newcastle net.

The visitors’ performance was certainly improved from Sunday’s, but a winless run at this stage of the season could prove costly.

Your ratings, from St. James’ Park.

Starting XI

Ali 8 – Once again, while the Brazilian wasn’t tasked with making too many difficult saves, his composure when both sweeping and pushing away danger was top class.

Trent 5.5 – Some very good defensive work, but, more notably, Trent was poor in possession. Bar one incredible taking pass, the Reds’ number 66 never found his range.

Natty P 6 – Beaten for pace by Wilson early on, and often looked uncomfortable on the ball. Impressive aerially, however.

Fab 6.5 – Good early block to deny Wilson.

Robbo 7.5 – The Scot’s terrific first-half cross was miscontrolled by Firmino. Generally lively down the left-hand flank.

Milly 7.5 – Absolutely faultless. The veteran’s best midfield performance in quite some time. Subbed after picking up a yellow.

Hendo 6 – By Liverpool’s captain’s lofty 2020 standards, he has been poor in each of the last two games now. Forcing the pass at the wrong times.

CJ 5.5 – Looked less energetic and bereft of confidence. Fatigue?

Mo 5.5 – Failed to score with two or three big chances, almost unheard of by the Egyptian in recent months.

Bobby 6.5 – Link-up play is be clicking again. A delightful through ball when Salah shot wide- but might well have scored with three big opportunities.

Sadio 7.5 – The Senegalese was the Reds’ most engaged forward throughout, and could not have done much more in pursuit of a goal. Possibly held by Darlow when trying to turn home a goalmouth scramble.

Subs

Gini 6.5 – Wasn’t convinced by this sub. Wijnaldum in a more advanced role while we were pushing for a goal felt strange.

ThiaGOAT 7.5 – First three passes were of insane quality and instantly improved the tempo. Did admittedly misplace one in injury time.

Big Shaq N/A – Could possibly have come on earlier, in my opinion.
