Liverpool are now without a win in three Premier League games after they failed to score against a Southampton side who fought hard to cling on to their early lead.

After an uninspiring end to the last calendar year – laboured draws against West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United were not what Jürgen Klopp would have had in mind – the Reds were hoping to get back to winning ways against the Saints.

Liverpool hadn’t lost a competitive match played on January 4 since 1947, but faced a Southampton side who had conceded just twice in their previous four games.

Indeed the Saints kept another clean sheet, despite opening the scoring themselves just two minutes in as Danny Ings finished off a training-ground routine from a free-kick to leave the visitors shellshocked.

Thiago Alcântara came off the bench to shine in Newcastle last week, but couldn’t affect the result here despite starting the match.

The Reds rarely looked like creating a clear-cut chance and their first shot on target didn’t come until the 75th minute – a tame effort from Sadio Mané which was easily gathered by stand-in stopper Fraser Forster.

It was a result which adds even more importance to Liverpool’s showdown with Manchester United on January 17. Should they lose that one, then the Reds will be in danger of being cut adrift in the Premier League title race.
