Liverpool headed into this game without a win in their previous five Premier League outings, and had only won one in their last seven in all competition.

That was against an Aston Villa side of teenagers, and even then the Reds struggled for a while, such was their bad bout of form.

The 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Sunday was another disappointment, but offered more positive signs that Liverpool were, at least, stirring.

Two goals from Mohamed Salah got him back among the goals, and Kopites would have been hoping that rubbed off on some of his teammates sooner rather than later so the Reds could start climbing back up the table.

And that’s exactly what happened here, as Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Trent Alexander-Arnold all rediscovered their goalscoring touch. Salah was cruelly denied a goal for his own over a very questionable handball decision.

But there were positives all round, with goals and a comfortable win to help restore some of the confidence which had been missing in recent weeks.
