Without a win in almost three months coming into this one, Liverpool u23s were desperate to taste victory against Manchester United.

Barry Lewtas’ young Reds hadn’t played in almost two weeks after their last match against Derby County was postponed, and they were hoping the rest would mean they are extra prepared for this one.

A poor run of form had seen Liverpool slip down to seventh in the Premier League 2 table, though they are only seven points off Tottenham Hotspur in top spot and were three places better off than their opponents in this match.

But a win for the Manchester side saw them leapfrog Liverpool, and put place further doubt on the young Reds’ chances of Premier League 2 success this season.

New signing Amad Diallo made his first appearance for the club and shone as he scored twice, but it was Joe Hugill who stole the headlines with four goals at Kirkby.

Liverpool got three goals and Joe Hardy was particularly impressive off the bench, making his first appearance since returning from injury and getting a goal and an assist in the process, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a hefty defeat here.
