Just a few days after a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool were back in the capital with the hope of taking another three points back to Merseyside.

This time it was the high-flying Hammers who were the opponents, with David Moyes’ side sitting pretty in fifth prior to kick-off and enjoying a fine run of form.

The stakes were high for this one. West Ham will have high hopes of securing European football for next season, but the Reds have far loftier ambitions.

Champions League football for next season is the absolute minimum requirement, but back-to-back Premier League titles is what the players and the fans really want.

After a rather large wobble at the end of December and throughout most of January, Liverpool cannot afford to drop too many more points if they are to catch and overtake Manchester City, who have taken control of the title race at this stage.

But there was nothing to worry about here, as the Reds produced some scintillating football in the second half to ease away from the hosts and place the result beyond doubt.
