Liverpool 0-1 Brighton: Ratings as woeful Reds fall to another home defeat

DON KOPLEONE rates the Reds on an evening where they slumped to back-to-back Premier League defeats at Anfield.

The worst performance of the Jurgen Klopp era? It was certainly the worst Liverpool performance in the Premier League since the painful 4-1 loss to Tottenham at Wembley.

When Brighton opened the scoring on 58 minutes, via a Steven Alzate volley of sorts, his was the first shot on target of the entire game.

Liverpool’s set-up was horrific. With Xherdan Shaqiri pushed out to the left, and both he and Roberto Firmino wanting to drop deep, it appeared as though Mohamed Salah was the only player the hosts tasked with providing some kind of goal threat. And with the Egyptian off-form, badly skewing a big chance early on, everything fell apart for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds are not completely dependent on Salah in attack, but against a solid Brighton side, and with Sadio Mané unavailable, only Thiago Alcântara ever looked likely to ever provide any creative spark.

It was a turgid display.

I want to sleep, and forget about it, so here are your ratings:

Starting XI

Queev 6 – Felt too far away from making a save for the Brighton goal. That may be a tad too harsh on the youngster, but my initial impression was that the Irishman had perhaps lacked the foresight or alertness of a regular number one.

Trent 6 – Poor decisions returned with a vengeance, even if a promising, low cross was turned over by Salah.

Natty P 6.5 – Some very impressive defensive work first half, but would have hoped to mount a clearance on the ultimate winner.

Hendo 6.5 – Fine again, defensively. Forced passes too much late on, but the Reds are clearly missing their leader in midfield.

Robbo 5.5 – From being the Reds’ most involved player for a large portion of the season, the Scot has been comparatively anonymous as of late.

ThiaGOAT 7 – Comfortably the best Liverpool player from an attacking perspective. Broke the lines regularly and genius free-kick deserved a finish from Firmino.

Gini 5.5 – These games do not suit the Dutchman, and he was deservedly hooked. Offered nothing.

Milly 5 – Beginning to look, on occasion, too old for this squad. This was such an occasion. Touch frequently horrible.

Mo 5.5 – On the one hand, today’s system asked too much of the Egyptian. On the other, he massively failed to step up to the occasion. Missed two big opportunities, and other than that his touch was very disappointing in and around the Brighton penalty area.

Bobby 5.5 – Back to horrid Bobby, *sighs*. Almost broke through at the start of the second half, but that was his sole spark. Failed to find a touch after a dreamy Thiago free-kick.

Little Shaq 5 – I do not want to penalise the Swiss for being stuck out on the left – it was tactically disastrous. But he still looked off even when switched to the right. Another one whose touch seemed to have deserted him, and he was promptly hooked.

Divvy 5 – I’ve been defending the Belgian recently, and think tactically he should have started ahead of Shaqiri for the sake of balance, but his cameo was horrible – best summarised by a massively overhit pass that floated out for a goal-kick.

Ox 5.5 – Tried to find space in between the lines a little, but only proceeded to smash a hopeful effort high after doing so.

CJ 6.5 – Could have been subbed on a full hour earlier than he was.
