Liverpool 1-4 Manchester City: Ratings as Reds collapse to another Anfield defeat

DON KOPLEONE rates the Reds on an evening where individual errors and a lack of cutting edge saw Liverpool slip to three straight home defeats.

I’m once again not going to be writing too much here – you probably don’t want to read it and I certainly do not want to dwell on that result.

Liverpool were not terrible, and the 4-1 scoreline flattered Manchester City. In fact, the hosts had the better of the first half, besides a missed İlkay Gündoğan penalty, and even after the visitors took the lead early in the second half, Jürgen Klopp’s side responded well enough, equalising less than 15 minutes later.

Sadly, though, it was Alisson Becker – so often the Reds’ saviour – who turned into the pivotal figure of the contest, with horrible errors for City’s second and third.

This Liverpool side is devoid of confidence and belief right now and Phil Foden sealing the victory with a superb fourth has ended their title chances.

Your ratings, as Liverpool sunk to another home disappointment:

Starting XI

Ali 4 – Never looked quite right today – maybe he was still slightly ill? – but ultimately the Brazilian’s big mistakes cost his side the game.

Trent 5.5 – Some decent stuff on-ball but was turned too easily by Sterling for both the penalty and the City opener.

Fabs 6 – Not great body position for the penalty, couple of important defensive interventions, though.

Hendo 6.5 – Did not look out of place filling in in defence again, but notable absentee from the Reds’ midfield right now. The skipper’s engine is sorely missed.

Robbo 6 – The Scot is not in a great run of form himself. No real mistakes but not currently dominating his flank like he can do.

CJ 7 – Was surprisingly substituted having been arguably Liverpool’s most proactive player. The youngster did not look out of place against a very high quality opponent.

Gini 6.5 – A very impressive first half where the Dutchman looked to drive with the ball at his feet more than normal. Less notable after the break.

ThiaGOAT 6 – Without doubt the summer signing’s least impressive Liverpool showing, and the Spaniard picked up a yellow card within the opening minutes. The midfield did look worse after his exit, however.

Mo 6.5 – Took penalty well but had little else in terms of involvement.

Bobby 6 – Tested compatriot Ederson with a stinging drive early on. Faded, though.

Sadio 6.5 – Pressed superbly at times and one defensive covering saved what would have been a goal. Disappointing lack of attacking moments of note.

Milly 6 – Doesn’t look to be at the required level anymore.

Little Shaq 5.5 – Hardly involved.

Kosti N/A – No clue what the thought process was here.
