Anything less than a win for Liverpool here, and the Reds’ hopes of retaining their Premier League crown would most likely be over.
Manchester City were on an imperious run, and had won every game since a disappointing home draw to West Brom on December 15.
That meant a seven-point gap between these two sides at kick-off, with the Manchester club also having a game in hand over Liverpool.
So, for the Reds, the task was clear. A win here and they would claw back closer to the current leaders, providing a much-needed boost to their title hopes after some recent poor results.
To do that, Liverpool needed to overcome their wretched home form. After so long without tasting defeat in a Premier League game at Anfield, the Reds had lost two on the bounce and look to be very much missing the boost provided by the home crowd.
Meanwhile, City haven’t lost an away match since November 21, when they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.
