Liverpool’s Premier League fortunes of late have been dreadful – but none of that mattered here.

After what felt like an eternity, the Reds returned to action in the Champions League. RB Leipzig were the opponents, and were an unknown quantity as the two sides had never previously met for a competitive fixture.

The manager was certainly more familiar, though. Julian Nagelsmann impressed when he pushed Liverpool hard with his Hoffenheim side a few years ago, and has since built up a reputation as one of the finest coaches around despite still being young at just 33.

He has even been touted by some Liverpool fans as the man they’d like to see replace Jürgen Klopp when the current boss’ Anfield journey eventually comes to an end. Only time will tell if that happens, but for now this two-legged tie provides an opportunity to take a closer look at Nagelsmann’s tactics and coaching style.

Recent history is on Liverpool’s side. The last five times theyhave played, and beaten, a German side over two legs, they have gone on to reach a European final.

The Reds will be hoping that this comes true again this term. A poor run in the Premier League of late means that European success is their final opportunity to grab some silverware in this extraordinary season.

That quest started here as Liverpool got their Champions League knockout campaign under way with a comfortable win over Leipzig in Budapest. Hopefully it will serve as a huge confidence booster going forward.
