There was a German theme to this clash, as Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel prepared their teams for a game which could have major implications on the race for Champions League qualification.
Liverpool were on the hunt for back-to-back victories in the Premier League, to build on an encouraging win away at Sheffield United at the weekend.
Tuchel’s Blues were an entirely different proposition, though. The Blades are rooted to the bottom of the table and are destined for relegation, while Chelsea were yet to lose a game since their new manager took over in January.
And that record continued here as Liverpool fell to five consecutive home defeats for the first time in their history. Mason Mount’s first half strike was enough to seal the Reds’ fate. The home side’s failure to hit a shot on target until the 85th minute showed how ineffective they were going forward.
