Liverpool 2-0 RB Leipzig: Ratings as Reds make light work of Champions League progression

DON KOPLEONE rates the Reds as they shook off their poor league form to dominate in Europe and keep their trophy hunt alive.

It’s incredible what a new competition can do. Liverpool have been hopeless in the Premier League of late, but as soon as they head to Europe for a game they put in one of their most dominant performances of the season.

Right from the off the Reds looked like they would boss the game, and they did so throughout. The only thing that was missing for a long, long time was a goal.

It genuinely looked for a while like it would never come. Two open nets missed and a whole host of clear-cut chances spurned had all of us tearing our hair out.

But eventually we got there, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané grabbing one each within the space of four minutes to settle the tie and ensure progression.

Leipzig had a couple of moments, and substitute Alexander Sørloth made things a bit nervy when he headed onto the bar not long after coming on, but the Germans never really looked like they would get back into the tie.

It’s just nice to be writing positive things again! Suddenly there is hope that the season may hold some glory for Liverpool yet…

Your ratings, from our new favourite home ground – the Puskás Aréna…

Starting XI

Ali 7.5 – Early save to deny Dani Olmo was important. Seldom called into action after that.

Trent 6.5 – Occasionally troubled by long balls in behind, but both calm and mature in possession.

Natty P 8 – Won maybe every aerial ball to enter the Liverpool half. Unbelievable late sliding challenge on Alexander Sørloth, too. An absolutely superb Champions League debut.

OK 6.5 – Positional fault for the early chance that Alisson had to save. Certainly the less assured central defensive partner tonight, but wasn’t ever really under enough pressure to make any big mistakes.

Robbo 6.5 – Communication between himself and Kabak seems non-existent, at times.

ThiaGOAT 8 – Probably the Spaniard’s most impressive showing since his first Liverpool start, at Goodison. Looked freed up by Fabinho’s presence and was able to dominate the midfield. Given a rest after 72 fine minutes.

Fabs 8.5 – With the Brazilian back in the midfield, Liverpool looked a different side. Won the ball back relentlessly and stormed into spaces. One of the best individual performances from any Liverpool player this season. Man of the match.

Gini 7.5 – Vintage Wijnaldum. Great efficiency, occasional overly-negative decision-making but you will allow it when he busies himself as successfully as he did today.

Mo 7 – First-half one-on-one was straight at Peter Gulácsi, but the Egyptian did brilliantly for his goal.

Sadio 6.5 – Looked like it was going to be “one of those days” for Mané, but his ball released Jota in the build up to Salah’s opener, before he arrived on the scene to seal the points. Hopefully it will be a confidence boost for a man who has looked devoid of it recently.

Diogo 6.5 – Could, and should, have scored at least one, but hassled Leipzig throughout and assisted the all-important opening goal.

Nabs 7 – Impressive cameo and came close to an assist when Origi found the side netting.

Divvy 7.5 – An absolutely sensational cross teed up Mané. Looked a threat whenever the ball came near him… unexpected to say the least!

Milly N/A – Lucky to escape an immediate booking.

Tsimi N/A – He exists!

Ox N/A – Also not a figment of our imagination
