After the jubilation over another strong European performance in midweek, it was back to the Premier League grind for Liverpool.
For all their dominance over RB Leipzig as they secured a place in the quarter finals of the Champions League, the Reds had been far less convincing in domestic competition.
Six home defeats in a row left a sour taste in the mouth, though the fact this game was away from home added a touch more hope pre-match – for all their woes at Anfield, Liverpool had won three of their previous four games on the road in the league.
Wolves had been shaky also and will have been disappointed to be sat in the bottom half of the table. The long, injury-enforced absence of star striker Raúl Jiménez has proven to be a big blow to their own European aspirations.
This defeat to Liverpool will probably end Nuno Espírito Santo’s chances of guiding his team to another European finish. For the Reds, it’s three vital point which will hopefully get their Champions League push back on track.
But it was all overshadowed by an awful injury to Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patrício, who was treated on the pitch for almost 10 minutes at the end of the second half after an accidental collision with Conor Coady’s knee.
