That felt big. Even beyond the fact Liverpool’s 2-1 comeback over Aston Villa temporarily restored their position in the top four – just for two hours – Jürgen Klopp’s side finally ended their horrific run of home form.
The Champions were eight Anfield league games without a win, and had yet to score a goal from open play there in 2021.
But Mohamed Salah nodding home an equaliser put an end to that second statistic, after Emi Martínez had parried an Andy Robertson.
And then, with time ticking away, Trent Alexander-Arnold silenced his critics, bending home a cracking winner.
Liverpool deserved their win.
Ollie Watkins’ opener was against the run of play, and for once the hosts looked very capable of creating open-play chances. Roberto Firmino’s return to form definitely aided them in that regard.
A huge result, and an end to the Anfield curse ahead of the visit of Real Madrid- just what the doctor ordered.
Your ratings, as Liverpool finally won a Premier League game at home.
Ali 5.5 – Very poor for the Watkins goal, but escaped pressure well after a couple of hospital passes.
Trent 7.5 – Almost gave away a penalty very unnecessarily five minutes before that incredible strike. But then he did that incredible strike. And right under Gareth Southgate’s nose. Scouser.
Natty P 6.5 – Standard solid Nat performance. Likes heading footballs.
OK 6 – Some dodgy early moments. Quite impressive on ball, though.
Robbo 7.5 – The Scot’s best performance in a long time. His attacking threat was back with a vengeance.
Gini 6 – Some decent spells but once again frustrating in his inability to ever dominate proceedings. Lacks the ability that Fabinho has to assert himself.
Fab 7.5 – Probably the best player on the pitch across 90 minutes. In world-class form. Man of the match.
Milly 6.5 – One of the better first-half performers, switching possession very effectively. Tired and gave away cheap possession in the second half, though.
Mo 6.5 – The Egyptian missed an early sitter, and his touch was not at its best… but he registered the crucial equalising goal as a reward for his awareness when following-in.
Bobby 7 – The Brazilian was as involved as he has been in recent months, and was unlucky to have his goal chalked off, and arguably to be substituted.
Diogoal 6.5 – A very mixed performance, with some moments of absolute class alongside some very sloppy passes. Did well in the build up to the Firmino goal that never was.
ThiaGOAT 6.5 – Almost opened his Liverpool account before Trent swiped home.
Sadio 5.5 – Not the greatest birthday showing, putting it kindly.
Little Shaq N/A – Cannot remember a touch, to be quite honest.
