Amid all the talk about European Super Leagues and concerns over the Liverpool’s footballing future, this Premier League clash with Leeds United felt a little inconsequential.
But there was still a game to be won. Whether or not the points will actually mean anything come the end of the season remains to be seen.
Despite exiting the Champions League in midweek – possibly for the last time ever – the Reds had won each of their previous three games in the league and took real momentum into this one.
The reverse fixture on the opening day of the season was a bit of a blockbuster, and Liverpool needed a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah to come away with a 4-3 win.
But the Reds were unable to hold onto their slender lead this time around, as Sadio Mané’s first-half opener was cancelled out by a late sucker punch as Diego Llorente headed home from six yards.
