Well, among everything else that’s been discussed in the last 24 hours, Liverpool needed/may have wanted to go out and win a potentially crucial/pointless Premier League game.
Who knows what’s going on? Not me, that is for sure.
I will not be getting political here, but you can read my thoughts on the matter tomorrow morning. Spoiler – I do not love this breakaway but I will point to some mass hypocrisy.
Either way, having been booed upon arrival at Elland Road, Jürgen Klopp’s side burst out of the traps against a Leeds side fresh off a heroic win against Manchester City.
Sadio Mané opened the scoring after Liverpool had already failed to finish a couple of ominous looking counter-attacks. A brilliant switch of play by Diogo Jota found an onrushing Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose pullback allowed the Senegalese to swipe home.
But Leeds improved after the break.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side could have scored two or three before they eventually found a late equaliser, profiting from poor defending at a set-piece. Klopp may, however, look at missed chances on the break throughout the second half that should have killed the game off.
Here are your ratings, after a strange day for football:
Ali 7.5 – Was in line to win the man of the match award, before his defence let him down on the late corner.
Trent 7.5 – Trying to carry this football team at the moment. Absolutely superb for the opener.
Fab 6 – Got away with an early hospital pass but intervened to break up a few attacks.
OK 6 – Looked a £50million defender first half and the kind of player you wouldn’t spend a fiver on after the break. Horrid for the equaliser.
Robbo 6.5 – Burst forward well but bottled a potentially game-winning three-on-two.
ThiaGOAT 7 – Very impressive before the break and superb lofted ball should have seen Salah double the lead.
Gini 5 – Had fewer touches than any other starter. That includes both goalkeepers and all those substituted. That is just not good enough when you are playing in the centre of midfield.
Milly 7 – Looks arsed, at least.Embed from Getty Images
Diogoal 7 – Struggled to keep headers down but superb switch of play led to Mané’s goal.
Bobby 6 – Looked typically unlikely to score when presented with a few half-chances. Almost provided an Oxlade-Chamberlain winner, though.
Sadio 6.5 – Ended his goal drought but didn’t always pick the right option on the counter.
Mo 5.5 – Missed a huge late chance to seal the three points.
Ox 5.5 – Ditto.
Don’t miss a thing
