Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle United: Ratings as Reds let themselves down in front of goal

DON KOPLEONE rates the Liverpool players after another disappointing late lapse saw them drop more points in their push for Champions League football.

What an absolute abomination of a football match.

Liverpool decided to play their whole front four today, and it was appearing to pay dividends: Jürgen Klopp’s side created a host of chances from the first to final whistle, and should have beaten Steve Bruce’s Newcastle comfortably.

The emphasis here lies on ‘created’ and ‘should have’, though.

Mohamed Salah struck a superb opener early on, but even by half-time there was a sinking feeling that this could be ‘one of those days’.

And, umm, it was.

Salah possibly deserves a free pass for missing his follow up chances, after that superb half-volley, but Sadio Mané and Diogo Jota will both leave the game feeling they really should have secured the three points.

Newcastle were unlucky to have their first injury-time equaliser ruled out for a harsh handball on Callum Wilson. But their second, a deflected Joe Willock shot, would count, and would strike a blow to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes.

Let us enjoy Thiago Alcântara and Mohamed Salah playing Thursday night football next year.

Who wants to go through these ratings?

No-one, I assume, but here they are:

Starting XI

Ali 7 – Did enough to allow the team to win the game. Let down by his defence failing to win headers late on, again.

Trent 7 – Almost scored one of the best goals you will ever see. Flashed quality whenever the ball came to his feet.

Fab 6.5 – Took as good a yellow card as you will see to prevent a late counter. All for nothing, sadly.

OK 6 – Some very good moments, but really struggled with Callum Wilson after his introduction.

Robbo 6 – Touch deserted him at times.

Gini 5.5 – Never looked like he was preventing the Newcastle counter-attack, while offering far less in possession than his midfield partner.

ThiaGOAT 7.5 – Found the pass into the front man every time he touched the ball. Should never have been taken off.

Mo 7.5 – Impressive all-round showing and a superb opener, but equally might have bagged a second on multiple occasions.

Bobby 7.5 – The change in system suited the Brazilian.

Sadio 5.5 – Some impressive creativity but might have scored two or three and looks far removed from the man who won the Premier League golden boot just two years ago.

Diogo 5.5 – Not the clinical showing we have come to expect from the Portuguese.

Milly 7 – Knew the drill.

CJ 5.5 – Did not know the drill and was recklessly steaming forward while the team needed to hold on.
