Liverpool 2-0 Southampton: Ratings as Reds finally find a way to kill off a game

DON KOPLEONE rates the Liverpool players after they bucked their recent trend of conceding late equalisers to secure the three points at Anfield.

It felt at times as though Liverpool were never going to find that crucial second goal to sink Southampton this evening, just as they had failed to do against both Leeds and Newcastle.

The Reds had wasted a wealth of opportunities after Sadio Mané’s headed opener half an hour in, but the points were far from sealed with the minutes ticking down.

Right on cue, up stepped Thiago Alcântara, who slotted his first goal for the side from the edge of the penalty area. With that, the Reds earned their first two-goal league victory at home since early December.

The hosts did not dominate, and Ralph Hasenhüttl’s visiting Saints had them on the back-foot early on, but the Liverpool win was ultimately deserved and leaves Jürgen Klopp’s side still in with a chance (however small) of reaching the top four.

Starting XI

Ali 7 – Stood tall to deny Che Adams, played one sublime outside of the foot ball into Mané’s feet, and a strong second-half slide tackle maintained the Reds’ lead. Sadly loses out on my man of the match award due to some reckless late passing.

Trent 7 – A sloppy opening ten minutes but started to ooze quality as the game progressed.

Natty P 7 – Tasked with bailing out Rhys Williams far too often, but did so confidently.

Rhys 5 – Sometimes not noticing defenders is said to be a good thing, but noticing a gaping hole where they should be is most certainly not.

Robbo 6.5 – Teetered on displaying some more ‘vintage Robbo’ but, once again, the Scotsman played a few too many sloppy passes.

ThiaGOAT 7.5 – Caught between pressing and sitting, at times, but was key to Liverpool’s build-up play once they gained a foothold in the game. Passed home a sumptuous second to seal the points.

Fabs 7 – The Brazilian was less influential than is normal in the first half but instrumental after the break.

Gini 5.5 – Far too often seemed totally bypassed in midfield, as was the case for the first-half Adams chance.

Mo 7.5 – Shot straight at Fraser Forster early on, but a perfect cross assisted the Mané opener, and the Egyptian should have had a second when Jota poked wide.

Sadio 7.5 – Busy throughout and battled well to win his header for that all-important first goal. Man of the match.

Diogo 6 – Did well to manufacture himself an early chance that he might have done better with, before wasting the one laid on a plate by Mo Salah.

Bobby 6.5 – Underhit pass killed one promising counter but the Reds’ No.9 found Thiago for the second.

Ox N/A – Not sure where his career is going if he stays at Anfield.

CJ N/A – On for the dying seconds.
