The Reds take part in their first full 90-minute friendly this evening as they take on Bundesliga side Mainz.
Liverpool saw their first action of pre-season earlier in the week, with back-to-back 30-minute games against Wacker Innsbruck and VfB Stuttgart in Salzburg. Both bouts ended in 1-1 draws.
Their meeting with Mainz will be the Reds’ first 90-minute test, though there are likely to be plenty of substitutions with the players very obviously a long way from match fitness.
Jürgen Klopp spent seven years as Mainz manager and is a legend on the banks of the Rhine, after leading the club to its first ever promotion to the Bundesliga in 2003/04.
Except for a two-year absence towards the end of that decade, the club has been ever-present in the German top flight and secured another year at the highest domestic level with a strong run-in at the end of last season, losing only one of their final five games to finish 12th, six points above the relegation play-off place.
The result doesn’t matter, of course, but it will be interesting to see more of some players in action, including new boy Ibrahima Konaté and Kostas Tsimikas, who caught the eye in his 30 minutes against Stuttgart.
