Liverpool 2-0 Burnley: Ratings as Reds treat returning Anfield crowd to victory

DON KOPLEONE rates the Reds in a victorious return to action in front of a full, adoring Anfield crowd.

As a full crowd returned to Anfield, Liverpool kicked off the second weekend of this season’s edition of the Premier League with a swagger, comfortably beating Sean Dyche’s Burnley 2-0.

The visitors started with a more adventurous gameplan than they have taken into games in the past. However, after an even first 20 minutes, Liverpool started to dictate proceedings – and Kostas Tsimikas’ delivery was turned home intelligently by Diogo Jota.

When Harvey Elliott – starting a first league game for his side – played through Mo Salah, it looked as though the lead had been extended to 2-0, but VAR chalked the Egyptian’s goal off for offside.

After half-time, the Reds’ performance stepped up another level and they began to really exert control. There were standout performances all over the pitch, with one coming from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who found Sadio Mané to settle the contest.

With fans back, this was always going to feel like a big occasion, and Jürgen Klopp’s side produced a fitting performance.

Your ratings, as Liverpool made it two out of two:

Starting XI

Ali 7 – A couple of smart stops late on, having been mostly untroubled- bar a set-piece bruising- before that. Cruyff-turned Ashley Barnes once to liven his afternoon up.

Trent 8.5 – Occasionally abandoned defensive duties a little too readily, but the Reds’ number 66 was absolutely devastating in possession, culminating in a gorgeous assist for the second.

Joel 7.5 – Calm and composed throughout, even if he did take his foot off the pedal for one of Burnley’s late chances.

Virg 8.5 – Authoritative first half, imperious second. The passing range was back – and on show for the Mané goal – while the swagger had never gone. Back at Anfield and back as man of the match.

Kostas Tsimikas was superb while filling in for Andy Robertson.

Shimmy Cash 7.5 – Pinpoint cross for Jota’s header and the Greek international’s defensive work felt much improved from last week.

Harv 7.5 – Occasionally over-complicated things, but the youngster’s quality and confidence were on show in equal measure. Fantastic touches in the build up to the second.

Hendo 8.5 – I don’t remember the captain doing anything wrong in ninety minutes. Brilliant display with some very impressing passing on show.

Naby 7.5 – Felt more sensible than at times in his Liverpool career, enabling Elliott to provide the attacking thrust.

Mo 7.5 – The only member of the front three without a goal (that stood), but arguably the most impressive. Used his body strength masterfully and was very unlucky not to at least register an assist – with Mané failing to make contact with the Egyptian’s cross.

DioGOAL 6.5 – The Portuguese did brilliantly for his flick-header opener. Generally was not quite as sharp as some of his teammates, though.

Sadio 7 – Opened his account for the season with a blistering right-footed strike, but the Senegalese may feel he should have had a hatful.

Bobby 6 – Gave away possession twice.

Thiago 6.5 – The positive of one dazzling run was cancelled out by one overly-risky pass.
