With much of the build-up to this encounter referring to the 3-3 when these teams met 16 years ago, a classic was expected with crowds returning for European nights at Anfield.
And, this time, the night was as big as had been billed.
Liverpool started on the front foot, and their advantage following an own goal could have been doubled when Mohamed Salah had a penalty.
But Mike Maignan, in net for the visiting AC Milan, produced a big stop, before the Italian side equalised and then jumped ahead just before half-time.
The Reds deserved to be in the lead, but could only reflect on their own mistakes, as they entered the interval trailing.
Soon after, though, Salah righted his wrongs to level the scores.
And Liverpool’s captain, Jordan Henderson, struck first time from the edge of the area to earn three points for his side.
It could have been easier, but it was a big and important win to start the group stage.
Your ratings, after an important three points:
Ali 6 – Could the Brazilian have done better for Milan’s first? He seemed to get down slowly, but otherwise faultless, if relatively untroubled.
Trent 6.5 – Cross was deflected for the opener, and remained a threat, but both goals came down Liverpool’s right.
Joel 5.5 – More of the issue for the away side’s turnaround than Trent was, especially for Milan’s first, when Matip failed to track the run in behind.
JoGo 7.5 – A very impressive return to the first team. Could be man of the match, if you can look past the lack of defensive communication at times.
Robbo 7 – More impressive than in recent performances, the Scot’s strike won a fortunate penalty.
Hendo 6.5 – Not the captain’s best performance, but what a finish! Hard to believe his sweet volley from the edge of the area was his first Champions League goal in seven years.
Fabs 7 – Can be relied upon on an important night. Never dominated the field to his best ability, though.

Nabs 7 – Impressed again in possession, but was nowhere to be seen for Milan’s goals.
Mo 6.5 – Penalty miss was unlucky, placed finish turned out to be offside. Not the Egyptian’s best performance of the season, but involved nonetheless.
Divvy 7.5 – Was accused of laziness in the summer, but worked very hard and found a delightful through ball for the Salah equaliser. Came off with a knock midway through he second half.Embed from Getty Images
Di-no-goal 6 – Again, not at his best, but did enough to give the Reds’ fans hope.
ThiaGOAT 7 – Won possession back twice in a short space of time, and looked as classy as ever. Hope he starts against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
CJ 7 – Tested Maignan from a fair distance. Looked lively after replacing Mohamed Salah.
Milly 6.5 – Picked up an unnecessary booking. Wasted time beautifully.
