During Jürgen Klopp’s reign, League Cup performances have always counted for more than results. But this visit to Carrow Road saw Liverpool satisfy in both regards.
A much-changed team saw a very young right-hand side, flanking some more experienced, established first teamers including Takumi Minamino, who reacted quickly to open the scoring within five minutes.
The first-half continued in an open fashion, and Norwich should have equalised when Caoimhín Kelleher produced a penalty save to preserve his side’s lead.
Just as they had the first, Liverpool opened the second half with a goal – this time Divock Origi flicking home after Kostas Tsimikas’ cross.
And the Japanese international, Minamino, secured himself a brace late on, after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain released him on the run.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening, as the Reds progressed.
Norwich must be sick of the sight of us…
Here are your first domestic cup ratings of the season:
Queev 7 – Some good early handling and an impressive penalty save, even if the latter only made up for spilling a stop that should have been tipped behind.
Bradley 6 – Started very brightly but lost his way a little after giving away the penalty. Moments of real promise, though.
Ibou 6.5 – Physically dominant but naïvely stepped up from the rest of the defensive line on a couple of occasions.
JoGo 8 – Displayed a dominant showing with the captain’s armband on, compounded by a couple of key blocks following the penalty save. Man of the match.
Shimmy Cash 7.5 – Delightful stand-up ball found Origi for the second.
Ox 6 – Unfortunately did not seize his chance back in the first team, even if the Reds’ number 15 was involved in the third goal. Some poor decision making.
CJ 7.5 – The youngster showcased some nice moments on-ball, as well as an improved use of his body strength. Played a deeper role than usual.
Nabs 6.5 – Quieter than the Guinean’s Saturday cameo, but fairly efficient.
Gordon 7 – Impressive work-rate and came close to becoming Liverpool’s youngest scorer once or twice.
Taki 7.5 – Two very composed finishes, even if the Japanese wasn’t always otherwise involved. Came up good when his side needed him.
Divvy 7.5 – Won the first header for the visitors’ opener before winning the crucial, placed header to double the lead. Involved heavily throughout.
Robbo 7 – Some precise work down the left flank. Is he getting worried about Tsimikas’ consistently strong performances?
Morton 7 – A couple of quick, meaty challenges. Impressed in a deeper position than he is used to playing with the academy sides.
Hendo N/A – On in injury time. Might have kicked the ball once.
